More than a dozen groups gathered under tents on Morristown’s Vail Mansion lawn last weekend to support sustainable issues, emphasizing waste prevention, for Festival Earth.

Children and attendees received small flowers in plantable pots and big yellow bird feeders at the Sustainable Morristown tent and were invited to paint flowers at the Pinot’s Palette tent.

There also were some very creative school submissions supporting water conservation. Sponsor Covanta gave a fascinating lesson in how trash can be turned into electric power, and a beautiful set of pictures about Foote’s Pond was displayed.

Members of the town Environmental Commission were on hand to field questions. Visitors learned about totally disposable bags and containers, ordered rain barrels and composters, and signed a petition to add a charge on carbon.

The Festival also featured an exciting exhibit of electric cars. And a large crowd participated in a free yoga lesson at noon.

Guests appeared to have a good time, and a threatening storm did not arrive until all was cleaned up.

Supporting sponsors included Covanta, the Hyatt Regency Morristown, Be Well, Green Mojo, Vegfest NJ, Pinot’s Palette, MPAC, Morristown Animal Hospital, Joshen Paper, the Seeing Eye, Whole Foods, Cox Printers, Java’s Compost, Back to Basic Wellness, Arbonne, Ace Solar,  NBD Gym, the Morristown Partnership and the Town of Morristown.
