The film A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet will be screened on Saturday, April 22, 2017 (Earth Day) at 7 pm at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township. This film dramatically portrays heroic leaders who led the environmental movement from its inception to the present. Suitable for grade 7 and above. Admission is free.
The film shows close-up the environmental wake-up sounded in 1978 by Love Canal residents (see photo) to the 20,000 tons of toxic chemicals seeping into their lawns. It features the campaign that led to protection of one-third of the Amazon rainforest that was energized by the assassination of the movement’s leader in 1988.
The confrontational stance of Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd (even more confrontational) led to a moratorium on killing whales, which is still being contested. The film spotlights the leaders who brought about the slow and reluctant recognition that climate change is real and dangerous.
Today many of these hard-fought environmental gains are being threatened by an in-denial US administration.
Narrators of the film include Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, and Van Jones. View the trailer at afiercegreenfire.com/trailer.
Kenneth Collins, recent Green Party candidate for the NJ State Assembly (24th District), will offer comments and answer questions after the screening.
Attendees at the film will have the opportunity to pick up information on environmental organizations and green home energy options and to petition their government representatives.
